01 / Story

A career change, done properly.

A fresh start: new city, new field, same determination.

I spent many years in sales: on the phone for brands like Vodafone, Eni and Fastweb, and on the shop floor at GameStop, Foot Locker and others. It taught me to listen, to negotiate and to turn a skeptical customer into a convinced one. But deep down I knew it was not what I wanted to do with my life.

So I changed it. I moved from Bari to Pisa and started again from scratch, to devote myself to my real passion: computer science and machine learning. I earned my BSc in Computer Science at the University of Pisa with a thesis built from scratch in Python: a decision tree that handles categorical attributes natively and splits them into multiple branches, something the best-known machine learning libraries, scikit-learn included, have yet to support.

For my MSc I chose the track where my two worlds meet: Data Science and Business Informatics. The rigor of the models and the ability to explain them to the people who use them: that is what I bring to a team.

Years in sales taught me what many technical profiles miss: explaining complex things simply.

Hands-on machine learning on real, large-scale data. Every project is open source on GitHub.

  • Optimization: custom Mehrotra interior-point solver for constrained Lasso, up to 264.9× faster than OSQP/SCS via CVXPY, scaling to 2,000 features.
  • Explainable ML: SoundPulse on 114,000 Spotify tracks, with anomaly detection, clustering validated by a 4.6M-parameter deep net (97.5% agreement), ensembles with 18× the R² of linear baselines and SHAP.
  • Data mining & time series: two IMDb projects on up to 149,531 records and 1,134 box-office time series: clustering, regression (R² = 0.75), FP-Growth rules, DTW clustering and MiniROCKET.
  • NLP & deep learning: 568,454 Amazon reviews, from TF-IDF baselines to a custom CNN-BiLSTM and DistilBERT, with ROC AUC up to 0.98.
  • Big data: 3.27 million seismic records with PySpark: imputation, K-Means, Random Forest and Folium maps.
  • Business intelligence: data warehousing, ETL with SSIS, OLAP cubes with SSAS, MDX and Power BI.
  • Generative AI: a Python chatbot built on the OpenAI API with GPT-3.5 Turbo (2024).
  • Languages & software design: Java Beans, reflection and annotations, Haskell type classes and Python decorators for Advanced Programming, an event-driven JavaBeans GUI with bound and constrained properties, and a Pythonic doubly linked list with a full test suite (2025).

Independent Software Development

Designed and built systems and networking software beyond what courses required: a multithreaded client-server collaboration platform in Java (TCP, RMI, UDP multicast), a multi-process supermarket simulator in pure C (POSIX threads, sockets, signals), thread-pool and non-blocking NIO servers, and an interpreter in OCaml. All published open source on GitHub.

  • Concurrency: a linked list with hand-over-hand locking in Java and a parallel map over vectors with its own thread pool in C++.
  • Networking: a client-server in C that serves many clients through a thread pool, and single-thread echo servers over TCP and UDP with non-blocking Java NIO.
  • Algorithms & libraries: an unbeatable Tic-Tac-Toe engine with minimax and alpha-beta pruning, and a reusable FIFO queue library in C.

Sales Representative

Telecommunications, Energy & Retail

Many years in sales, on the phone and on the shop floor, before becoming a computer scientist and data scientist. Every day was a negotiation with real people, real objections and real targets.

Telesales – telecommunications and energy
  • Outbound telesales for major Italian telecom and energy providers, including Vodafone, Eni, Fastweb, 3 and Wind.
  • FlipCall, Bitritto (BA), working on behalf of Comdata, one of Italy's largest customer-experience companies.
  • E-Care, Modugno (BA): Vodafone mobile plans and home broadband lines.
  • Mobile, broadband and energy offers for residential customers, handling every call from first contact to signed contract and adapting the pitch to each customer's needs and objections.
Retail – GameStop, Foot Locker and others
  • Sales associate at GameStop across several shopping centers in the Bari area: Auchan Casamassima, Auchan Modugno, Mongolfiera Bari Santa Caterina and BariBlu Triggiano.
  • At Auchan Casamassima, took part in several store openings, helping set up the shop and drive sales from opening day.
  • Beyond video games and consoles, sold smartphones, mobile plans and SIM cards, advising customers on the best device and tariff.
  • Sales in a computer store: PCs, components and accessories, matching each customer with the right configuration for their needs and budget.
  • Retail sales at Foot Locker in a high-traffic store.
How I worked
  • Full sales cycle: needs analysis, objection handling, negotiation and closing, always against daily and monthly targets.
  • Turned skeptical customers into buyers, guiding them toward the offers with the highest margin for the company.
  • Built repeat business through after-sales care and long-term customer relationships.
  • Learned to explain technical products, from broadband contracts to PC hardware, in plain words to non-technical people.

What I took from it: listening to people, persuading with clear arguments, explaining complex offers simply and staying effective under pressure. Skills I now bring to data work.

Beyond the code

Years of selling taught me to talk to anyone. I bring that to data work: I can turn a model into a story that a manager, a client or a non-technical team can act on.
